- Las hembras maduras son amarillo-anaranjadas con una característica franja violeta que se extiende desde la parte posterior del hasta la base de la aleta pectoral.
- Los machos, tienen una coloración característica con cuerpo violeta y una mancha del mismo color claramente definida en sus aletas pectorales.
Tamaño: Hasta 7cm. en hembras y hasta 12-15cm. en machos.
Diferencias sexuales: Comentados en la coloración y forma.
Temperatura: 22-28ºC.

Comportamiento: Nadan en grandes grupos, los machos, territoriales, tienen un harem de hembras.
Podrán ser mantenidos con invertebrados sin problemas (en caso de solventar los problemas de alimentación), algunos autores no recomiendan mantenerlos con otros peces de aguas abiertas.
Reproducción: No ha sido exitosa en acuarios.
